The Old Man and the Screen

I love blogging / I hate blogging

One thing I have a love/hate relationship with blogging is the need (all self-imposed) to have something more than a kernel of an idea, or a comment, in a post, an entry?, the need to have your thoughts in order, to correct the many many (!) mistakes a first pass always brings, to don’t be lazy, to put in the work, to make the effort.

Love / Hate

I love this about writing a blog post, it gives me purpose while doing it, and there is a tangible sign of the work done when it’s done - love it.

I also hate it, because I like to be lazy, I like to write something quickly, an infant thought, get it out of my head as quickly as possible, get back to do whatever the hell I was doing when this thing took over my mind.

I hate that the work is there lurking, looking at me like a sparring partner, grinning “do you want to spend 30 minutes writing stuff for your imaginary friend instead of being productive?” I mean, there is always something else to do, something more important than what is frankly, a hobby?

Many such cases

But it’s not just blogging that behaves like this, right? Many other hobbies, tasks, errands, quickly get out of proportion, ever-growing in their requirements (all self-imposed), ever looming on the horizon until all the fun, love, is sucked out of them, and only hate remains. I’m not a writer, but is this what writer block feels like? Because if it is, then I have been a writer my whole life - very blocked too!

A path forward

I know myself, thank God for that, I will not pretend things will change, but I will make an effort in release some of those self-imposed chains and allow myself an easier time, not only blogging, but getting things done. As time flies by, you realise that something half done is a lot better than nothing ever done - you can always improve something done poorly, but you can’t improve a void, only stare into it.

P.S. I have been writing a lot about writing blogs lately, not sure why, not planning to get stuck on this, but it is what’s on my mind as I just picked it up again after a long hiatus… bear with me? (pun intended)
