The Old Man and the Screen

La notte (1961)

There are movies that you're not meant to find until you hit a later age and have experienced enough, directly or not, to let the themes resonate and breathe.

Antonioni's La Notte is one of those movies - all of Antonioni movies are those kind of movies if we are honest.

Those long silent takes in a stark modernist Milan, that is as empty as the characters lives, tell more than they should.

Sadly for us, 60+ years after, the alienation and frivolousness of modern life, the disintegration of marriage, the old preying on the young, are still very much on the menu, but you do need to have lived a little past your prime to get that punch in the guts.
